In earlier times, countries like Australia, Canada, America and South Africa were leading in the field of heavy mineral mining and India was on the 21st place. However, after the inception VV minerals stands on the 5th position among the world’s heavy mineral producers. This company was started by Mr. S. Vaikundarajan.

The beach sands of India are abundantly rich in mineral contents, but, it is not used for the right purposes. In fact, they are used for filling of pits and construction purposes. This poses as waste of resources. Also, the excise duty and service tax on mineral producers is unnecessarily high.
The private heavy mineral manufacturers like VV Minerals, India have to compete with international markets. For the sake of development of these remote areas and the state economy, and ultimately the country’s economic benefit, there needs to be relaxation in the norms of this industry.
The following video contains information about the report presented by the Department of Geology and Mining and the Indian Bureau of Mines which states that VV Mineral is proven innocent in the illegal mining case.
In a news article published on Business Standard on October 28, 2013, the claims on the VV Minerals, were dismissed. It also provided information about their mining activities in India. They are the largest Ilmenite manufacturers and exporters in India. They are the first private ilmenite exporters of India. The demand for zircon in India is about 130,000 tons, where as zircon mining in India amounts to hardly 50,000 tons. The remaining needs are fulfilled by importing. The demand for titanium pigments in the Indian markets is about 200,000 tons, yet only 60,000 tons is actually produced by Indian manufacturers; the remaining is imported mostly from China and other developed countries. As for Rutile, Indian demand is around 40,000 tons and only 18,000 tons are produced in India.
The only mineral that is exported is ilmenite because the Government policy doesn’t recognize the value addition of ilmenite to the economy. Also, on the globally the demand for heavy minerals is rising day by day but, Indian manufacturers are playing a very minimal role in the supply, leaving Garnet.
The domestic market of India for heavy minerals is quite young and has tremendous growth potential. Our current consumption of pigment is only 1.5kg / person, whereas the developed countries typically use 4kg / person. The same trend applies for other minerals like Zircon and Rutile as well.
As for utility, Garnet is widely used as an abrasive in oil producing companies for corrosion control. Ilmenite and Rutile are Titanium feedstock used mainly for producing Tio2 pigment and small quantities in production of welding electrodes. Zircon is used in ceramic tiles as an opacifier and in Refractory for insulation.
Major players in the manufacturing and mining of these heavy minerals include VV Minerals India. They are based in Tamil Nadu and the country’s finest heavy mineral manufacturers and exporters.
It is a family owned business, established by Mr. S. Vaikundarajan, who is the chairman and managing director of the company. Starting from 1989, in Tamil Nadu, they have now grown to be the leaders in the industry on the global front.
Although it is always perceived as an illegitimate business, the heavy mineral mining industry is in fact a much regulated industry. There are several permissions and clearances that need to be fulfilled at the District, State and Central level. These processes are time consuming and compulsory.
There are statutory Authorities like the District Collector; Commissioner of Geology & Mining in the State Level and the IBM & AERB in the Central level for inspection of the Mines regularly, to whom half- yearly and Annual returns are being submitted.
The Royalty payments vis-à-vis the transport permits are being audited annually by the Dy. Director of Geology & Mining and local Revenue Officials.
Likewise the Processing Units are being inspected by the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board Officials; TN Electricity Board Officials and the AERB Officials, to whom the annual returns are being submitted. In response to the review of returns corrections are effected in the registers & records.
